How Shadows Chase the Balance How Shadows Chase the Balance is among the most spiritually and psychologically devastating albums I’ve ever heard, but it’s also a simple album about living life, about our peculiar position in the universe and the candid exploration of the impact those experiences have on all of us. It’s also, by a large margin, one of the strongest albums I’ve heard this year. Gabriel Keehn, Tiny Mix Tapes, 2008 ... the music never becomes inpenetrable, offputting or "interesting" but, alas, unlistenable. If it seems a strange critical tack to praise an independent musician by downplaying his underground credentials or off-road tendencies, it's only because I think music fans who might otherwise be put off by indier-than-thou rhetoric would actually really dig Boduf Songs. Lion Devours the Sun Hauntingly beautiful music that is oft mistakenly labeled "folk." This is something darker, something much more sinister, and Mat Sweet's songwriting muse dives into the troubled waters of a tormented soul and the mysterious forests of the mind. It's an album best experienced whole, alone, in a dark room. This is the best record of the year, period.
